SafeScan ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.

2. Data We Collect

SafeScan is designed with a privacy-first approach. Here is what we collect:

• Allergy profiles: The allergen selections, dietary restrictions, sensitivity modes, and custom avoid lists you create. This data is stored locally on your device only.
• Scan history: Records of products you scan, including barcode numbers, product names, verdicts, and timestamps. This data is stored locally on your device only.
• Product lookups: When you scan a barcode or search for a product, the barcode number or search query is sent to our caching server, which may forward the request to the Open Food Facts API (an open-source food database) to retrieve product information. Only the barcode number or search term is transmitted — no personal or profile data is included in these requests.
• Camera access: Used solely for barcode scanning and ingredient label capture. Images are processed on-device and are not uploaded or stored remotely.

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

• Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
• Location data
• Device identifiers for tracking purposes
• Usage analytics or behavioral tracking
• Health records beyond what you explicitly enter into allergy profiles
• Advertising identifiers

4. How We Use Your Data

• Allergy evaluation: Your allergy profile data is used exclusively on-device to evaluate product safety.
• Product information: Barcode numbers are sent to Open Food Facts to retrieve ingredient data and product details.
• Scan history: Stored locally so you can review past scans. Never transmitted off your device.

5. Third-Party Services

SafeScan uses the following third-party services:

• Caching Server — Product lookups are cached on a server for faster performance. Barcode numbers and search queries are routed through this server. No personal data or allergy profiles are sent — only barcode numbers and search terms. Product data retrieved from Open Food Facts may be cached on this server to speed up future lookups.
• Open Food Facts — An open-source, collaborative food product database. When a product is not found in the cache, the barcode number or search term is forwarded to the Open Food Facts API. Open Food Facts is governed by its own terms of use and privacy policy. Product data is provided under the Open Database License (ODbL).

6. Data Storage & Security

All user-created data (allergy profiles, scan history, preferences, notes, and favorites) is stored locally on your device using iOS-native storage mechanisms. No personal data is stored on our servers.

A caching server stores publicly available product data (ingredient lists, product names) keyed by barcode number to improve lookup performance. This cache contains only product information sourced from Open Food Facts — no personal data, allergy profiles, or usage history is stored on our servers.

Cached product information is also stored locally on your device to enable offline functionality and faster repeat lookups.

7. Data Retention & Deletion

Since all data is stored on your device, you have full control over it:

• Delete individual scan records from the History screen
• Clear all scan history from Settings
• Clear the product cache from Settings
• Delete allergy profiles at any time
• Uninstalling the app removes all stored data

8. Children's Privacy

SafeScan does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app allows creating family profiles (e.g., for a child's allergies), but this data is stored only on the parent or guardian's device and is never transmitted to us.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
