SafeScan is a food product scanner that helps people with food allergies and dietary restrictions make safe purchasing decisions. Scan any food barcode and get an instant safety verdict based on your personal allergy profile.
Go to the Profiles tab, tap the + button, and enter a name. Then select your major allergens (Milk, Egg, Fish, Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Soy, Sesame), any extended allergens, dietary restrictions, and custom items to avoid. Choose your sensitivity mode and save.
No. SafeScan does not require registration or sign-in. All your data is stored locally on your device. Just download, set up your allergy profile, and start scanning.
Point your camera at a food product barcode. SafeScan reads the barcode, looks up the product in the Open Food Facts database, and cross-references every ingredient against your allergy profile. You can also capture the ingredient label for OCR analysis to get even more accurate results.
Safe — No allergens or dietary conflicts found. Caution — Uncertain ingredients or unverified claims. Needs Review — Advisory statements like "may contain" were found. Unsafe — The product contains allergens or violates your dietary restrictions. Always verify by reading the actual product label.
Contains Only alerts you only when an allergen appears in the ingredients or "Contains" statement. Contains & Advisory also flags "may contain" and "traces of" warnings. Strict uses both modes and additionally flags unknown or uncertain ingredients as potentially unsafe.
If a barcode isn't in the database, you can capture the ingredient label using your camera. SafeScan will use OCR to read the ingredients and run the safety check. You can also manually enter a barcode number.
Yes. Enable "Scan for All" in the scanner to check a product against all your saved profiles simultaneously. Each profile gets its own verdict.
All your data — allergy profiles, scan history, favorites, and notes — is stored locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to our servers. Product lookups query the Open Food Facts database, but your personal profile data never leaves your device.
Go to Settings to clear your scan history or product cache. You can delete individual profiles from the Profiles tab. Uninstalling the app removes all stored data completely.
Partially. Products you've scanned before are cached locally and can be re-evaluated offline. However, looking up new barcodes or searching for products requires an internet connection to query the product database.
Make sure you've granted camera permission to SafeScan in your iPhone's Settings > SafeScan > Camera. If the issue persists, try closing and reopening the app, or restarting your device.
Product data comes from the Open Food Facts community database and may occasionally be inaccurate or outdated. Always verify by reading the actual product label. You can also capture the ingredient label with OCR for a more accurate result.
This can happen if the ingredient is listed under an uncommon name not in our allergen database, or if the product database entry is incomplete. Always read the physical label. If you find a mismatch, please report it to us so we can improve our allergen mapping.
