By downloading, installing, or using SafeScan ("the app"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the app.

2. Description of Service

SafeScan is a food product scanning application that helps users identify potential allergens and dietary conflicts in food products. The app scans product barcodes, retrieves ingredient information from third-party databases, and evaluates product safety based on user-created allergy profiles.

3. Medical Disclaimer

SafeScan is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. The safety verdicts and allergen analysis provided by the app are for informational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for reading product labels yourself, consulting with medical professionals, or following advice from your allergist or healthcare provider.

Always read the actual product label before consuming any food product. Product formulations can change without notice. SafeScan's database may not reflect the most recent product information.

4. Accuracy of Information

SafeScan relies on product data from third-party sources, primarily the Open Food Facts database. While we strive for accuracy:

• Product information may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate
• Ingredient lists in the database may not match the current product formulation
• OCR (optical character recognition) of ingredient labels may produce errors
• Allergen synonym matching, while extensive, may not cover every possible ingredient name
• Advisory statements ("may contain") may not be fully captured in database records

You should always verify product safety by reading the physical product label.

5. User Responsibilities

• You are responsible for the accuracy of the allergy profiles you create
• You are responsible for verifying product safety through the actual product label
• You should not rely solely on SafeScan for life-threatening allergy decisions
• You are responsible for keeping the app updated to benefit from the latest allergen database

6. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, SafeScan and its developers shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages resulting from:

• Inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated product information
• Incorrect allergen identification or safety verdicts
• Allergic reactions or adverse health events resulting from reliance on the app
• Failure of barcode scanning or OCR functionality
• Unavailability of the product database or network services

7. Intellectual Property

The SafeScan app, including its design, code, and original content, is the intellectual property of its developers.

Product data is sourced from Open Food Facts contributors and is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Product photos and content are available under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike licence (CC BY-SA).

8. Third-Party Services

SafeScan uses a caching server and the Open Food Facts API to retrieve product data. Your use of data retrieved through these services is subject to their respective terms of use and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or completeness of third-party services.

9. Modifications to Service

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the app at any time without prior notice. We may also update these Terms of Service from time to time. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

10. Termination

You may stop using the app and delete it at any time. All locally stored data will be removed upon uninstallation.

11. Governing Law

These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable laws. Any disputes shall be resolved in the appropriate jurisdiction.
